My Rock Climbing Gear

In this short article, I am listing all the gear I have bought and currently use for rock climbing, both indoors and outdoor sport climbing.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO ROCK CLIMB OUTSIDE. Rock climbing is relatively safe if, and only if, you have done up all the safety systems correctly and know how to use the gear properly. The vast majority of accidents and fatalities from rock climbing is a result of human error.

I started rock climbing outside with friends who let me borrow their gear. They were experienced climbers and knew how how to properly set up the anchoring systems and the ropes. I quickly bought my own harness, shoes, chalk bag, and helmet so that I had everything I needed to “Top Rope”. This essentially meant I could show up and climb, but I was, and largely still am, completely dependent on their experience and skills in order to climb outside.

Getting started indoors at a gym is a great idea and is less risky. Depending on the gym, the only gear you need is a harness, shoes, and chalk bag. Many gyms are equipped with the ropes and belay devices, but they will require you to get belay certified before you are allowed to belay your climbing partners.

My Gear

Note: While I tried to link to the exact color and sizing of all my gear items, the links do not necessarily represent where I bought the gear from or how much I paid for it. I try to buy discounted gear whenever possible.
